In the wider Horley area, pressure has been put on schools due to the town’s expanding population, resulting in schools reportedly struggling to meet demand. To mitigate this, Surrey County Council initially appointed Pellings to carry in depth investigations on several school sites to establish the feasibility of developing a new 420 place two-form entry Primary School and Nursery at the North West Horley Development Site.

We conducted a study to establish the feasibility of providing extra primary school places for the area which was then signed off. We also offered a range of our multi-disciplinary services, including Traditional Contract, Full Design, Lead Consultant, Building Surveying, Architecture, Structures, M&E Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Clerk of Works and Principal Designer services.

The new school was partly funded by the developer of an adjacent site and is situated in the heart of the growing estate, helping us tackle the schooling issue directly. We designed a dual-use recreation area that can be used by other user groups outside school hours, catering to the needs of the education system, as well as the wider community. We believed that creating a new and modern space for various user groups would be the best use of resources as we always strive to add extra value to any project we undertake.

The completed school provides a modern high-quality school, which eases the pressure on schools in the Surrey area and was delivered to BREEAM ‘Very Good’.
