Project New Build Student Accommodation
Site Ramsey Hall, W1
Value £6m

Pellings were appointed by Mulalley as Architects for a scheme to provide new build student accommodation.

The new building is designed to occupy an existing courtyard site with provision for landscaped areas including a 'sunken garden' link to the existing student building.

Landscaping comprises island lawns and areas of planting have been created to provide a peaceful external space. The cantilever of the new building at first floor level provides a covered vehicular access route to wheelchair users parking spaces to the rear of the site.

Despite its proximity to the existing adjacent buildings the new building remains independent of those buildings and with a few contractual constraints were able to operate as normal throughout the contract period.

The new buildings comprises eight floors of student accommodation and upper and lower ground floors are smaller in area than the floors above to enable movement at garden level around the site.

A variety of materials have been used including stone rainscreen cladding system to upper and lower ground floors and a mix of render, brickwork and zinc cladding to the floors above. The materials draw reference from the existing buildings forming the courtyard.

Ramsey Hall was recently announced as the winner of LB Camden's Building Quality Awards 2009 in the Large Commercial Category.
