Three Hills Sports Ground opened by MP

The Three Hills Sports Ground in Folkestone was officially opened on Friday March 15 by the Rt Hon Hugh Robertson MP, Minister for Sport and Tourism. Pellings have acted as Project Manager on the £7.8m community facility for people living in Folkestone, Shepway and the surrounding areas. A centre of excellence for cricket, hockey and netball, it provides some of the best sporting facilities of their type in the country.

Hugh Robertson MP heaped praise on the facility and congratulated the team on accomplishing "a cutting-edge design that not only looked fantastic but really works well." He added that Three Hills Sports Park was an exciting development that embodied the Olympic Legacy. "I think taking sport to young people and helping them achieve their ambitions is exactly what the Olympic Legacy should mean. Three Hills Sports Park brings a fantastic opportunity to young people in Folkestone that simply didn't exist beforehand."

The outdoor pitches which are designed for national standard hockey, county and club cricket and regional netball; and indoor facilities comprise a first-class indoor sports hall supporting cricket, hockey, netball and other sports, as well as a gym and a dedicated youth area. The facilities will be managed by the not-for-profit leisure trust, Freedom Leisure.

The project has been entirely funded by a donation from the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust and the land is provided by Shepway District Council on a 125 year lease. The facility is owned and run by The Cheriton Road Sports Ground Trust, a registered charity comprising volunteers from Folkestone Cricket Club and Optimist Hockey Club.

Andy Mainwaring, Chairman of the Trustees said: "We were very impressed with the submission made by Freedom Leisure. It has expertise in running similar facilities and an excellent track record in Sussex, Surrey and Kent. We are confident Freedom Leisure will work hard to meet the charitable aims of the trust and offer leisure opportunities for the community, while delivering a high standard of customer service in a cost-effective manner." he said.
