Pellings host New Build Housing workshop for Local Authority representatives

Pellings' latest client workshop focussing on Local Authority New Build Housing took place at the RIBA on Thursday 5 February 2015. The event, which was the second Pellings have held on this topic, was hosted by Ian Collins, Head of Employers Agent Services at Pellings, and included a presentation by Mark Bradbury, Head of Economic Development & Property at Sevenoaks District Council.

Mark opened the session with an overview of the approach he and his team at Sevenoaks are employing, as part of a Property Company, to tackle the challenges they are facing delivering new build housing. Mark also shared his views on the recently released Elphicke-House Report which reviewed the current role of Local Authorities in housing supply. Other topics of discussion included the political effect on Local Authority new build housing, effectively selecting contractors and the use of frameworks, attitude to off-site Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) use and recommendations that the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) provide a central point for advising Local Authorities on setting up Property Companies.

The event was attended by a range of representatives from inner London Authorities, to rural Borough Councils; and included some who were taking their first steps into new building housing, to those much further along with their programmes to deliver new homes. Pellings have a strong track record of working with Local Authorities, many of whom have not been involved with new build housing for over a quarter of a century, to understand the development potential within their land portfolios, identify sites, and deliver homes to meet demand within their communities.
